Pet Door Installation Tips

  • Installing in Glass Windows:
With the exception of cat doors made expressly for that purpose, conventional pet doors cannot be installed in window glass. Regular glass is not strong enough to take the pressure of a larger pet "hitting" the flap for entry and exit. The details of the door will tell you if it is suitable for window glass installation. see: Glass-Mount Cat Doors

  • Patio Door Installation:
Conventional pet doors cannot be installed into glass patio doors because the tempered glass of the door panel cannot be cut without shattering (unless you have it done professionally). We offer Patio Door Inserts for turning your patio door into a Pet Door. see: Patio Cat Doors

  • French Doors:
Conventional pet doors cannot be installed in doors which have multiple panels such as French glass doors or wooden panelled doors unless you take out the glass panel and replace it with a wooden insert that will frame the door. Even then, most won't fit into the required panel space because it is just too small. It takes considerable altering that is best left to an expert.

  • Wall Installation:
Conventional pet doors can be installed in walls. To accomplish this, you must cut a hole in the wall and usually frame the inside of the cut-out yourself. (The normal framing sleeve that comes with the doors is not wide enough to frame the whole inside of the wall. Additionally, the screws that come with the doors are not long enough to reach across a width of that size. You will have to visit your local hardware store to purchase screws long enough to reach from one side of the wall to the other.)

Some doors have matching wall insert-tunnels. The tunnels can be purchased to fit any wall depth and inserted when you install the door.

Some doors are made SPECIFICALLY for wall-entry installation and contain everything necessary for thicker walls. see: Wall Cat Doors

The details on each door will tell you if it can be inserted into a wall and whether an additional tunnel is available for framing the inside of the cut-out.
